Belgium still doesn't get it

The Belgian court system just doesn't get it. Despite Brussels being the capital of the EU, the world does not bow to Belgian law. Apparently seven Iraqis are suing over first Gulf War. They are filing suit against Bush 41, Cheney, Powell and Schwarzkopf for "crimes" committed during the war (specifically the accidental bombing of a civilian shelter in Baghdad).

I have several problems with this "suit."

First, Bush & Co. are Americans. They are not and will not be subjected to an asinine Belgian law. Let's see the Belgian authorities try to come and arrest Bush 41 or to serve papers on Cheney or Powell. The Belgian government has NO standing to judge the first Bush administration. Outside of this law (which violates US sovereignty), give me one point of the US Constitution that gives the Belgians authority over Americans. There is no part of the Constitution that says that we are required to consult or care about what anyone else, other than the American people, says.

So the Belgian courts have no jurisdiction over the US President. But why do they have jurisdiction over a matter that happened in Iraq? None of the plaintiffs involved were Belgian citizens. I don't believe that I can go file suit in France to sue Saddam for mental anguish. Why should these seven Iraqis be able to go to Belgium to file suit against Bush 41? Maybe if they were Belgian citizens or if the bunker was in Brussels I would understand the suit. But none of those conditions are true. Where is their standing to file in Belgium?

I already know that the answer to these questions will be that "international law" allows this. And Belgium is the nation that has passed this "international law" of idealistic morality. The law allows for anyone to file suit against anyone else for any alleged "war crime." I can't file suit in France, but I can in Belgium.

The United States is a sovereign nation. We have not subjugated ourselves to "international law." We have not succumbed to the concept of "international government" as espoused by the United Nations. We will continue to be independent. We will continue to defend our principles and beliefs. And we will dare you to lay a hand on any of our leaders. Belgium would do well to realize that we are not Chile.
