Where were you?
Looks like the Sarge over at Sgt. Stryker has been getting a few too many "containment" letters. He's a little harsh in his treatment of the peaceniks, but he does bring up a whole bunch of valid points. Heck, he even made me blush with some embarrassment. For the record, I never liked the idea of containment (still don't) and I never forgot about the events that Sarge mentions, but I'll admit that they weren't at the forefront of my mind. Revenge for those events is important, but I never actively pushed for payback. I'm going to have to ice down this slap from the Sarge.
Read the whole thing, especially the last five paragraphs. A little challenge now and then is a good thing and this is a good one.
You'll have to forgive me. I get in my dark moods sometimes and let the poison flow from my mind to the page, then it's gone. It's a strangely cathartic experience.
Posted by: Paul at March 16, 2003 11:14 PMActually, I thought it was very, very good. After sleeping on it all night, it seems like you're really pissed, not that soldiers died, but that their deaths were basically in vain (nothing was done as a result). I believe that when you sign on that line to join, you have to understand that you might die. And it might be unexpected and for reasons that you don't understand. That is one of the risks of joining the armed forces.
But with that risk comes the right to expect that if you die, your government will do the right thing. If you die because of something you did, the government should educate others so that it doesn't happen again. If you die because of something someone else did, you have the right - actually the rightful expectation - that the government will take some kind of action to ensure that your death is not needless and wasted.
No forgiveness is needed, Sarge, as you did nothing wrong. You have a right to be pissed about the hypocrisy of the government and people that you're defending. You've earned that right.
